Formulated by the ISO or as also known as International Organization for Standardization, the ISO 7089 is an International Standard that stipulates the attributes of washers. This standard covers any Stainless Steel Plain Washer which belongs to regular series or grade-A products. The production of these washers is in the hardness classes ranging between 200 HV and 300 HV. In addition to the hardness value, the manufacture of Stainless Steel Flat Washers is also in nominal sizes or nominal thread diameters, which ranges between 1.6 mm to about 64 mm.
A flat washer is also a plain washer. The purpose of using 316 Stainless Steel Flat Washers is common in those instances when the hole of the said washer has a larger diameter as compared to the nut used to the set-up. While a fender washer may look similar to a Grade 8 Flat Washer, the recognizable difference is that the outside diameter of a fender type is conventionally much larger or is inversely proportional to its centre hole. In terms of functionality; a fender as well as a Number 10 Flat Washer, would support the nut and bolt. They evenly distribute the load across their surface.
Though the type of washers is confused as to their form, they are different. The standard for flat washers for general applications is the brainchild of the American National Standards Institute or as known as ANSI. A Steel Type A Flat Washer generally has broader tolerances and is used in areas where accuracy is not critical. On the other hand, applications with stringent tolerances where the outside diameters are characterized, specifically - as being narrow, regular or wide; for a set of distinct bolt sizes make use of a Type B Flat Washer.
Developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers, or SAE, these 304 Stainless Steel Flat Washers were specified such that they broadly meet the demands of any automotive manufacturer. Unlike their USS counterparts, the SAE washers constitute a smaller Outer Diameter and their gauge could either be thin or thick. United States Standard or as referred to as the USS Grade 10.9 Flat Washer, was initiated as a means of meeting engineering requirements for industrial applications in various sectors such as production, maintenance as well as repair. While the Inner Diameter and Thickness specifications for both the SAE and USS washers are the same, the main difference between them is the Outer Diameter, which is larger in the USS 316 Ss Flat Washer.
Unusually shaped, a square Thick Flat Washer is best suited for use in timber building and as reinforcements for concrete floors. These components are multi-faceted. Not only could they be employed with several kinds of fasteners, but they also evenly distribute larger loads through a wall or timber. As a square-shaped Thin Flat Washer can carry larger loads; they act as reinforcements for structural applications. In addition to evenly distributing a load of a fastener; a SS 304 Flat Washer aids in reducing both, heat and friction throughout the tightening process along with providing some level of electrical insulation.

Some applications need a softer washer. Materials such as Nylon, polyethylene, PTFE, ceramics, rubber, felt, and leather, are used as raw materials Washers for applications like these. The most common grade of Stainless Steel Flat Washer is A4, which is synonymous with alloy 316 or marine grade stainless steel. Grade A4 is known for its increased resistance to chloride corrosion in comparison to alloy 304. Stainless steel grade 316 exhibits properties that are much higher than alloy 304, especially with regards to pitting, strength, toughness, and use at elevated temperatures.
